Who is winning the four value chains combined in the US and EU combined?

Market share over ten years. Use the toggles to change market, product and units.

Shares are measured from the buyer’s side — what the US and the EU themselves report importing — which is the cleanest way to compare exporters. EU figures cover extra-EU trade only (imports from outside the Union).

The scoreboard, 2025

Market share of each supplier across all four value chains.

The picture in one glance: China still leads almost everywhere, Vietnam has taken the low-cost manufacturing crown in footwear and is strong in electronics, Bangladesh owns low-cost apparel in Europe — and India’s clearest wins are pharmaceuticals in America and a fast rise in electronics. Use the market toggle above to flip the scoreboard.

About this data

Source: UN Comtrade, annual imports reported by the United States (reporter 842) and the European Union (reporter 97, extra-EU trade), valued CIF in current US dollars. All 40 product groups tracked by this site are available on both charts — the four buttons are shortcuts that bundle chapters together, and Custom opens the full list. The bundles are: textiles & apparel = HS 50–63; pharmaceuticals = 30; leather & footwear = 41–43 and 64; electronics = 85. EU customs-procedure sub-records are aggregated to totals. Every chart’s underlying numbers can be downloaded as CSV.

Two definitions worth knowing before you quote these numbers. Electronics here is HS 85 — electrical and electronic equipment. That covers phones, which is the story of the last five years, but it excludes computers and laptops: those sit in HS 8471, inside the machinery chapter (HS 84). So this is a comparison of electrical goods and phones, not of all electronics. Vietnam’s laptop assembly in particular is understated by this definition. Leather & footwear is HS 41–43 plus 64, which includes HS 43 (furskins and artificial fur) — a small chapter most readers would not think of as leather. It stays in for continuity with the standard grouping, and it moves the totals very little.
